Utrecht Ultrajecti 1657 Half-Leather Very Good None Latin, Hebrew 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
Leusden, Johannes, 1624-1699. Philologus Hebraeus : in quo pleraeque quaestiones generales philologico-Hebraicae, concernentes textum Hebraeum Veteris Test. dilucidè pertractantur : in sine adjunctus est catalogus Hebraicus & Latinus sexcentorum & tredecim praeceptorum, in quae totus. 1657. 8vo, original vellum, nice condition save for some general light soiling and the vellum boards are showing some curl. Copy with late 18th century signature of "EX-LIBRIS MARSHALL". An old dealer has indicated the book is form the library of the famed chief Justice John Jay Marshall, which I am not able to confirm or deny. "Among the prominent Dutch Hebraists and theologians was Johannes Leusden, from the University of Utrecht. One of his most important studies, the Philologus Hebræus (editio princeps, Utrecht, 1656), goes far beyond a philological research of the Hebrew language and is a comprehensive study of Judaism and Jewish life. " An entire chapter is devoted alone to Kabbalah and the Kabbalists. For those interested in bibliography, there is a pioneering section detailing the known surviving manuscripts of the Bible. Leusden also edited very important editions of the Hebrew Bible including the fames 1661 Athias edition. The team of the Christian Leusden and the Jewish Athias resulted in the attraction of both a strong Jewish and Gentile clientele and very successful publishing venture.

Rotterdam, Leers 1686. LIGHTFOOT, JOHN: English Biblical critic and Hebraist; b. at Stoke-upon-Trent (38 m. n. by w. of Birmingham), Staffordshire, Mar. 29, 1602; d. at Ely, Cambridgeshire, Dec. 6, 1675. After completing his education at Christ's College, Cambridge, he taught at Repton, Derbyshire, for two years and then took orders. Appointed curate of Norton-in-Hales, Shropshire, he became chaplain to the Hebraist, Sir Rowland Cotton, who urged him to study Hebrew and other Semitic languages. He accompanied Cotton when he removed to London, and then became rector of Stone, Staffordshire, for about two years, but in 1628 changed his residence to Hornsey, Middlesex, in order to be able to consult the rabbinical collections at Sion College, London. During his residence at Hornsey he wrote his first work, dedicated to Cotton and entitled Erubhin, or Miscellanies, Christian and Judaical, penned for Recreation at vacant Hours (London, 1629). Lightfoot was a prolific writer and is noteworthy as the first Christian scholar to call attention to the importance of the Talmud.
