3 ARNOLD DAGHANI c1950s HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL, SKETCHBOOK AND PERSONAL DIARY OF NOTED ARTIST, POET, AUTHOR AND SURVIVOR OF THE HOLOCAUST INCLUDING TWO [2] SELF PORTRAITS
SUSSEX ENGLAND ROMANIA ISRAEL 1955 Good+ Good English 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
On offer is a remarkable original handwritten personal diary, workbook and artist sketch book of Arnold Daghani. The green leather book is written in long hand English and contains original literary works; poems, short stories, musings and references to his works plus much, much more with most of them dated 1955 through 1958. At the end a story titled "Noodles and Buttons in Cakes of Soap", it says this story was in 1946 awarded the one and only prize for stories then under the title of the "Yellow Bridge". On the two first pages there is an ink self portrait of a young Daghani and another in the abstract style. Born into a Jewish family in Suceava, Romania (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), Daghani and his wife were imprisoned in and escaped from an Ukrainian labour-camp, in the 1950s left Romania to live in Israel, France, Switzerland and finally England, settling in Hove in 1977. Many of Daghani's works document his experiences in the slave-labour camp of Mikhailowka (1942-3) and in the ghetto of Bershad. His works from the 1960s and 1970s relate to broader themes of contemporary life, including music, literature, religion, politics and the circus, as well as the difficulties of being an artist. Daghani has become well known in his native Romania and major collections of his works are to be found in the National Gallery, Romania and the Museum of Modern Art, Bucharest and at Sussex University as part of the Centre for German-Jewish Studies. He has been collected widely in England and abroad. A large 4to measuring approx. 29 x 22 x 4 cm. 402 pp, 55 blank. The clasp lock is broken, no key. Some rubbing on the leather covers otherwise G+.

7 HEINE, Heinrich DER RABBI VON BACHERACH
Berlin Propyläen-Verlag 1923 Leather Spine, Tips Very Good+ None German Language Folio - over 12" - 15" tall Max Liebermann Signed by Illustrator
A MASTERPIECE OF BOOK DESIGN, ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FINE PRESS BOOKS, AND A HIGH POINT OF GERMAN AND FRENCH LITERARY AND ARTISTIC TRADITIONS Number 117 of 400. No copies in 30 years in the American auction records. 17 Original Lithographs, signed twice by Max Liebermann and numbered. Book: HEINE, Heinrich. DER RABBI VON BACHERACH. Propyläen-Verlag, Berlin, 1923. Folio. With 17 ORIGINAL Lithographs by Max Liebermann. 1/2 Black Morocco and boards. This copy SIGNED TWICE, as usual on limitation, and additionally (not in all copies) on frontispiece lithograph. Minor spotting and soiling to beige boards, otherwise a HANDSOME AND FINE COPY and internally clean. This book is a wonderful combination of two Jews, one who brought to France, German literary tendencies, and the other who brought to the Germans, French artistic tendencies. Heinrich Heine has been called 'the first modern intellectual' and became one of the greatest and most respected writers of the 19th century. Leibermann was the Great German artist that led the Berlin secession group and introduced French impressionism to Germany. This fine press book, a magnificent combination of typography, design and illustration, is often lauded as among the most beautiful of Jewish fine press books if not all fine press books. Liebermann demonstrates a refined sensitivity in his artwork that parallels the emotive text. The Rabbi of Bacherach includes a lovely and romantic description of a Passover- the earliest and most expressive of the essence of the festival, in modern Jewish literature. The story here recounts that (in trans. and referring to the Haggadah) " It was an old heirloom, with ancient wine stains. It had come down from the days of her grandfather. The book contained many boldly and brightly colored pictures. As a little girl, she had often looked at it so eagerly on Passover evenings."

9 Madison C. Peters Justice to the Jew - The Story of What he has done for the World, a New and Revised Edition
New York NY Trow Press 1910 Hard Cover Good+ None English Language 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall
Rather interesting if not disturbing book being a signed copy of "Justice to the Jew, The Story of What he has done for the World, a New and Revised Edition, by Madison C. Peters". Published in New York by The Trow Press, New York, 1910. Signed on the first free endpaper by the author, Madison C. Peters. What is fascinating is that a subsequent owner has written, in pencil, notes on the pastedown and endpapers, and the copyright page. And the notes are virulently anti-Semitic; for example, under the signature, we read a penciled note, "The Jews are trying to rule Germany, looks very much like Germany is going to kick the Jew out as their Jews are skimming the German people. This is 1910 and the Jews are making plenty of money..." This volume, though only documented with hearsay is believedto have been Madison C. Peters' own copy; the irony of a book decrying anti-Semitism ending up in the hands of an anti-Semite is somewhat disturbing. 244 pages. 7x5 inches, bound in green ribbed cloth with two paper labels, in good condition. Unique Judaica offering.

1936 ORIGINAL PRE STATE OF ISRAEL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND SCHOOL NOTEBOOKS [3] HANDWRITTEN BY DAVID BEN GURION, THE FOUNDING FATHER OF ISRAEL'S YOUNGEST DAUGHTER, RENANA BEN GURION [LESHEM]
11 RENANA BEN GURION [LESHEM] 1936 ORIGINAL PRE STATE OF ISRAEL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND SCHOOL NOTEBOOKS [3] HANDWRITTEN BY DAVID BEN GURION, THE FOUNDING FATHER OF ISRAEL'S YOUNGEST DAUGHTER
TEL AVIV JERUSALEM SDE BOKER 1936 Good+ Manuscript 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
On offer is a super group of four [4] original pre State of Israel notebooks three [3] for school; history, chemistry, religious studies and a personal 14 page 8 x 6 inch diary [1] handwritten by 10 year old Renana Ben Gurion beloved youngest daughter to the hero of Israel's Independence David Ben Gurion. The books offer an unusual insight to both this young girl's early life and the state of education in the pioneer era. Historians and researchers will also recognize the diary as an unparalleled look into this young girl's life; what appears to be an idyllic life of carefree times with the back drop of Arab terror of the 1936 Arab Riots and the political difficulties living under British Mandate and of course that of her famous father, mother and siblings. Research finds that the diary was written in the month Tamuz and the year Tarzav thusly identifying the time as the summer of 1936. We also learn that Renana used to go to the sea with her sister and friends for a swim on Saturday's and holiday mornings. She liked swimming on her stomach. She was too shy to participate in games on the beach with a group of friends who were her friend's friends - Miriam's friends. This group was going there regularly. Miriam begged her to join the game, and she finally succumbed and joined. She was very shy. She describes in detail a celebration that took place for her sister's graduation. A special dress was made for her for the occasion. All the relatives were invited and also the teacher and his wife. The gifts to the sister included flowers, trees in pots, and suitcases. Renana loved to read the newspaper "Davar Leyeladim" or Davar for children. Davar was a popular newspaper in Israel and had special simplified version for children. Renana used to run to the window, looking for the mail man, who delivered the children's newspaper every Thursday morning. She notes visits with her uncle Arye, Arie, the aunt of a friend and her special friend named Miriam. She went with her and Miriam's brother to the sea. Every Tuesday morning, Miriam's classmates got together at the beach. Renana when she got back home from the beach, tried to surprise her mom by cleaning everything and she made the bed. Another day she went to the beach with her sister, named Geula. Her brother had to travel on that day and she did some sewing for him. She sewed his name on his clothes. She also read an English newspaper, which they had at home, or rather looked at the pictures in it. In one snippet she writes: "Afternoon I had to go to a music lesson, so i went" sounding like she had to take music lessons, rather than wanted to take them. Obviously a Ben Gurion family imposed music lessons! BIO NOTES: Renana Leshem, Ben-Gurion's youngest daughter, worked for decades as a microbiologist at the Israel Institute for Biological Research in Ness Ziona. She had one son, Uri. Overall G.
