On offer is one of the most unique diaries we have seen being an original manuscript diary, the entries dated from July 15, 1895 to Nov. 14, 1896, handwritten by the charming and rather brilliant Charitta Sanford of Fall River, Massachusetts, the unmarried daughter of Samuel and Charity Sanford has left a remarkable relic of Massachusetts Americana.. Charitta was born into an old New England family in 1863 in Fall River and later lived in Norton, where she attended Wheaton Seminary for Women. In later years Charitta lived on Sanford Road in North Westport, Mass. This most extraordinary diary is quite an accomplishment having all entries, even the longer ones, written in rhyme. Charitta writes about the comings and goings of her family, her household duties, local and national politics, international affairs, Fall River events, the weather, family business, even a contentious squabble by relatives over land all in rhyme. She also has introspective entries, where she expresses her self doubts, her philosophy of life and loneliness. The diary is almost completely filled (190 pages); most days have entries. The many hundreds of names mentioned and local events will delight local historians and collectors. Some days have long or multiple entries. The writing is excellent and very easy to read. Here are some examples of her wonderful rhyming entries: Across the road for huckleberries With Annie Thornton went. And some we picked seemed as large as cherries Filled pails, came home content Last night Sam returned from a bicycle tour A week 'mong White Mountains he spent Much beautiful scenery he saw to be sure Was tired but was glad that he went. With threatening disaster this morn we were met Which made the day one that we shall not forget T'was 5 years ago we had similar career Though the first of the two was by far more severe T'was fire in the chimney that caused such a stir Though things might have been much worse than they were. The Chemical Engine appeared on the scene & in short space of time all was calm and serene. Republican Rally was holden last night & the numbers attending were truly a sight 50 were women, 2,000 were men & Governor Greenhalgh was in town again. A little baby girl was born At 9, I think, o'clock this morn To Mr., Mrs. Perey Reed, A precious bundle, yes, indeed! A sound in the cellar this morning we heard A sizzling or boiling like sound & Seizing a lighted lamp made thorough search A leak in a water pipe found. The merry sleighs go jingling by For the sleighing is quite fine The weather, too, is excellent These two pleasures combine. A terrible accident happened last night At Polo Game, Skating Rink, folks had a fright The railing of one of the galleries fell & dear me, the suffering, 'tis dreadful to tell News boys along the streets "Extras" did call For me 'tis impossible here to tell all! Another dreadful massacre Have made those cruel Turks On good folks of Armenia Dear me, what wicked works! "McKinley's elected!!!" is the news we now hear Yet we've not received all reports far & near At least not from small towns, Large cities we know, And straight for McKinley majority go, Our Country is saved from calamity great From what danger, blood-shed, who can estimate! For god has been with us, averted the tide. Let most heartfelt gratitude towards him abide, In each every heart, thus the wisest decide. Sometimes I feel sad and lonely I scarce know the reason why I'm sure I have everything homely And all that I want have I. The diary measures 4" x 6 ¾" and has 190 pages.VG+.
