1 FRANCISCO BERRA 1880 HANDWRITTEN SPANISH MANUSCRIPT: "Proyecto de Reglamento Para la Seccion de Estudios del Ateneo del Uruguay"
MONTEVIDEO URUGUAY 1880 Quarter Leather Very Good Manuscript
On offer: "Proyecto de Reglamento Para la Seccion de Estudios del Ateneo del Uruguay" by Francisco Berra (1844-1906). Written in a fine calligraphic hand, Spanish language, leather spine, folio sized, the book is dated 1880 and is a lovely relic of handwritten South American history, this book was beautifully produced. Research on the author finds: "an Argentine by birth, he grew up and is most associated with the city of Montevideo where in 1865 he settled and studied law at the University. A lawyer, journalist, historian, educator, member of Society of Friends of Popular Education Berra worked closely with José Pedro Varela [a noted sociologist, journalist and politician of Uruguay] but like many men he had two sides. He earned his law degree in 1872. During the Santos administration had to take refuge in Buenos Aires as a result of "Antiartiguista" position. Later he returned to Montevideo where he remained until early twentieth century. He returned to Buenos Aires to spend his last years." VG.
