1 BERTHOLD MAHN [Charles Desire Berthold-Mahn] 1933 - 1944 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF PERSONAL LETTERS BY ONE NOTED ARTIST TO HIS BROTHER ARTIST IN THE 'ABBEY DE CRETEIL' GROUP

On offer is a super archive of original manuscript letters [10] and postcards [7] handwritten in French by Charles Desire Berthold-Mahn [1893-1975] more usually known as Berthold Mahn, to his friend, noted artist René Arcos. One of the postcards has an original drawing by Mahn. Dated through 1933 to 1944, not translated in any detail, but casually reads as friendly correspondence from one intimate friend to another. Overall VG BIO NOTES: Berthold Mahn was a French designer and illustrator, born in Paris on December 25th, 1881 and died in 1975. At age 16 he was made to work factories but he did lessons in the School German Pestle (School of Applied Arts). During his military service, he met Albert Gleizes who encouraged his artistic talents. Through Gleizes he got into contact with the members of the Abbey of Créteil, a community of artists founded by George Duhamel and Charles Vildrac. He remained in contact with them all his life. With his friend Henry Pourrat with whom he illustrated certain works, he went Auvergne in the forties. He illustrated about fifty works, among which 'Life and Adventures of Salavin' and the 'Column of the Pasquier' by Georges Duhamel, 'The Thibault' by Roger Martin du Gard. BIO NOTES: René Arcos, been born on September 16th, 1880 in Clichy (Seine) and died in Neuilly-sur-Seine on July 16th, 1959, was a French poet and novelist. He met George Duhamel in 1906 and became part of the Abbey of Créteil group. The abbey opened to the artists stopped their activities in 1908. He became established in Paris and gave lectures across all Europe on poetry. Reformed, he was the war correspondent of Chicago Daily News during the First World War. With Roman Rolland he founded the magazine Europe and was the chief editor of which there until 1940. 5.5 x 3.5/8.2 x 10.6 inches. VG. En francaise: Correspondance de BERTHOLD MAHN à René ARCOS. Ensemble de 10 Lettres manuscrites et 7 Cartes Postales, signées par Berthold Mahn. Correspondance échangée entre 1933 et 1944. Un dessin de Berthold-Mahn imprimé au dos d'une des cartes. Bel état de conservation de cette intéressante et très amicale correspondance. Dimensions : entre 13,5 X 21 cm et 21 X 27cm pour les lettres, 14 X 9cm pour les cartes postales. BIO NOTES: Berthold Mahn est un dessinateur et illustrateur français, né à Paris le 25 décembre 1881 et mort en 1975. A seize ans, obligé de travailler pour vivre, il fut embauché dans une fabrique de fourneaux et de cuisinières. Il suivit des cours à l'École Germain Pilon (future École des Arts Appliqués). Pendant son service militaire, il rencontra Albert Gleizes qui l'encouragea dans la voie artistique. C'est par Gleizes qu'il entra en contact avec les membres de l'Abbaye de Créteil, une communauté d'artistes fondée par Georges Duhamel et Charles Vildrac. Il resta en en contact avec eux toute sa vie. Avec son ami Henri Pourrat dont il illustra certains ouvrages, il parcourt l'Auvergne dans les années quarante. Il a illustré une cinquantaine de livres, dont Vie et aventures de Salavin et la Chronique des Pasquier de Georges Duhamel, Les Thibault de Roger Martin du Gard. BIO NOTES: René Arcos, né le 16 septembre 1880 à Clichy (Seine) et décédé à Neuilly-sur-Seine le 16 juillet 1959, était un poète et romancier français. Il rencontre Georges Duhamel en 1906 avec lequel il participe à l'expérience de " l'Abbaye de Créteil ". L'abbaye, villa en bord de Marne ouverte aux artistes, cesse ses activités dès 1908. Il s'installe à Paris et donne des conférences à travers toute l'Europe sur la poésie. Réformé, il est le correspondant de guerre du Chicago Daily News durant la Première Guerre mondiale. Il fonde en 1918 les Éditions du Sablier à Genève puis participe avec Romain Rolland à la fondation de la revue Europe dont il reste le rédacteur en chef jusqu'en 1940. 5.5 x 3.5/8.2 x 10.6 inches.
