1 MR. CURTIS 1853 - 1866 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT CIVIL WAR AND PRE-CIVIL WAR ERA DIARY OF A 53 YEAR OLD OXFORD NEW YORK MAN
Oxford NEW YORK NY Binghamton 1853 Good Manuscript
On offer is the handwritten manuscript diary by a man who lived in the town of Oxford New York. While it is not specifically written this journal no doubt belongs to a man named Curtis as he refers to family in full name. The entries range from 1853 to 1866. Mr. Curtis does a superb job highlighting the events on both a national and local level never missing a notable occasion or newsworthy happening. Over 31 pages the many interesting entries include references to the assassination of Col EE Elsworth, the hanging of John Brown, the surrender of General Lee, the assassination of President Lincoln, Stephen Douglas died, a lawyer who committed suicide by slitting his own throat, train wrecks and ships sinking and much more. There are many, many entries pertinent to the Oxford area providing a treasure of genealogical info and mentioning the name of each person in Oxford who died and their age at death. The covers have detached from the book. The diary is string bound. The paper is blue with some foxing. The pages have detached from the spine in several sections but the pages are in excellent condition. No rips or tears etc. It looks like one page was cut out of the book at some point. The writing is in old ink that has turned brown over time and is legible.
