1 S. DEXTER KING 1864 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF SUTTON MASSACHUSETTS BOOTMAKER - COBBLER AND SUPPLIER TO THE UNION ARMY
SUTTON MASSACHUSETTS ME 1864 Very Good+ Manuscript
On offer is an original handwritten manuscript Civil War era diary dated 1864 authored by S. Dexter King of Sutton, Massachusetts. Mr. King was a boot maker/cobbler and a supplier to the Union Army. Dexter does a commendable job as a diarist detailing his life including the weather, Church and Temperance meetings [even including some minutes from meetings in the back of the diary and from Children Temperance meetings] plus the many, many entries about making and delivering boots and having to do with military business. He mentions many names including: Charles H. Searles, Lucy Ann Sherman, Mr. Read, Dr. Rev. Hill, W. Putnam and many more. Personal notations of importance to Mr. King include "George Lowe enlisted in the 31st Reg. Co.H Jan. 6, 1862. Re-enlisted Feb. 23rd 1864. Discharged April 26, 1864 for physical disability...". Dexter also provides a treasure trove of historical events, names of visitors and to whom he visits and conducts business with. This is a super piece of Civil War era Americana referencing local history and commerce. A number of ephemera pieces are also found providing further local historical news. Overall VG.
