1 MARY GERTRUDE HITCHENS SUPERB 1880s THROUGH 1890s TRAVEL DIARY/JOURNAL/SCRAPBOOK OF THE MUCH TRAVELLED MARY GERTRUDE HITCHENS SPANNING THREE DECADES WITH THE MENTION OF MANY OF EUROPE'S ELITE
EUROPE, ASEA 1880 Original Vellum Very Good Manuscript
330 PAGES OF FASCINATING READING IN TWO OVERSTUFFED DIARY / SCRAPBOOK / JOURNALS, ONE BEGUN IN 1880 AND THE OTHER IN 1899, BY THE HAND OF MARY GERTRUDE HITCHENS AN AMERICAN WOMAN THAT LIVES THE ARISTOCRATIC LIFE HOBNOBBING AND TRAVELLING WITH EUROPE'S ELITE. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE TRAVEL DIARIES WE HAVE EVER SEEN. THE WAY IT READS THIS WOMAN HAS BEEN AT SEA AND IN QUITE ALOT OF OTHER COUNTRIES. THE BOOKS ARE STUFFED WITH WRITINGS AND EPHEMERA MAKING FOR AN EXCEPTIONAL GLIMPSE INTO THE MIND AND WORLD OF MARY. THE BOOKS THEMSELVES ARE VELLUM COVERS. MANY, MANY CUTTINGS FROM THE NEWS PAPERS OVER THOSE YEARS,THERE ARE LOTS OF OLD POSTCARDS, AN INVITATION CARD THAT READS, TO MEET, THERE EXCELLENCIES THE VICEROY AND LADY LYTTON, THE MAHARAJAH OF DURBHANGA, REQUEST THE HONOR OF MR AND MRS HITCHENS, COMPANY OF THE TOWN HALL, ON THURSDAY 5TH FEB 1880 THE PERSON WHO AS WROTE THE DIARY MUST HAVE BEEN A RELATIVE OF A GENERAL HENRY WHITE HITCHENS, AS SHE WROTE DIED MARCH 9TH 1890 THEN SHE GOES ON ABOUT GERMANIZATION OF FRANCE, AND SAYS SOMETHING AT BERLIN WOULD BE AN UNSPEAKABLE DISASTER AND MISFORTUNE FOR ANYBODY OF NON-GERMAN BLOOD. SHE MENTIONS LORDS AND DUKES A LOT. AT THE END OF THE DIARY SHE GIVES A LIST OF EVERY PLACE SHE WAS STAYING XMAS AND NEW YEAR FROM 1859 TO 1913 THE YEARS 1859/1862/1864. IT SAYS AT SEA THE REST ARE ALL OVER THE WORLD STARTING IN CALCUTTA 1863 AND ENDING IN RICHMOND YORKSHIRE 1913 THIS IS AN EXTREMELY WELL TRAVELLED PERSON, SHE SEEMED TO BE IN ITALY ALOT AS A LOT OF THE POSTCARDS ARE FROM THERE, IT IS SOMEWHAT AGE-TONES AND THE COVERS ARE SOMEWHAT SOILED BUT OTHERWISE QUITE READABLE AND AN EXCELLENT VOYAGE WITH AN INTERESTING VICTORIAN LADY. TO RECAP THERE ARE TWO VELLUM DIARIES ONE DATED 1880 THE OTHER 1899 BUT BOTH HAVE NOTES AND WRITINGS FROM LATER YEARS.
