Mr. Gillette explains in detail the 1st Annual State Fair; "...we all went down to the State Fair last Wednesday...there was the greatest Collection of people ever known in New Haven. They were estimated at 30,000 on Thursday. We all had our Dagartyp [Daguerreotype] taken at N. Haven at Mouthrops which we think are tolerably good we shall send them to you...the weather was delightful all through the time of the fair - a great many cattle were down on the Naugatuck Road for Exhibition. Aunt Greta could not go because it was going to cost her a few penny's poor woman. Dwight Balwin is very sick he was taken with a fever it has settled in one leg & the most painful thing you can think of it has been cut open several times to day it discharged a pint it is between his knee and ankle - going into he water is the cause. The Main Law works well among us there was not a man seen drunk among all that assembled at the fair which tells well for the Law. Greathill folks are all well. ..the Meeting house at Great Hill is to be dedicated the 25th of this month. Now Charles be faithful to discharge all of your Christian duties attend to all the means of your grace Choose the society of Christian & forget not to pray daily to your heavenly Father for yourself & for us this is the wish & desire of your affectionate Father. Wm. Gillette" The father concludes the letter to his son with wise, affectionate words and that he will send him five dollars. VG.
