1 HENRY STEBBING The Christian in Palestine or Scenes of Sacred History
London Geo. VIRTUE 1873 Full-Leather Very Good None W. H. BARTLETT
THE FAMOUS BLACKMER COPY OF THE BEAUTIFULLY ENGRAVED 'CHRISTIAN IN PALESTINE. WITH 80 Fine Plates in 4to. AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY! The Book: Henry STEBBING: The Christian in Palestine or Scenes of Sacred History, Illustrated by W. H. Bartlett. Published by George Virtue. London. [1873]. Printed by Joseph Rickery of Sherbourn Lane, London. 4to, Full bright red morocco with gilt rule and heavy gilt spine. Vignette Title. 1 Map. 1 Plan. Double page panoramic view of JERUSALEM plus 78 fine steel engraved views. Stebbing adds his own historical detail to Bartlett's fine engravings. The book surveys not only Israel & Palestine, but also Greece and Italy. Christian, Jewish & Arab interests. Save for some minor rubbing to hinges and corners, an unusually beautiful and fresh copy of a book often found heavily foxed. A pencil note indicates that this was lot 1018 in the famous BLACKMER Sale. While I cannot guarantee that, it matches the catalogue description exactly with 'some spotting, mostly at margins, contemporary maroon morocco gilt, slightly rubbed. Blackmer had one the most celebrated travel libraries of the 20th century and the catalogue of his collection has become a standard reference.
