1 MRS. HOLMES 1900s ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF MANUSCRIPT LETTERS FROM A MOTHER TO HER 'LITTLE GIRL' MARRIED TO ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST PROMINENT FAMILY OF RAILROAD TYCOONS AND INDUSTRIALISTS
MASSACHUSETTS, LOUISIANA, EUROPE 1900 Very Good English
On offer is a super archive of 65 original, manuscript letters written to Rachel Holmes [1885-1966], noted horsewoman and the wife of Fay Ingalls [1882-1957] noted industrialist and outdoorsman. He was the son of Melville Ezra Ingalls, the railroad magnate. Fay was a Wall Street lawyer who moved to business. At Pratt & Whitney he played an important part in the munitions industry during World War I. He lacked the hard sell of his father and found the greed & corruption of lower Manhattan distasteful & depressing. In 1922 he took over the presidency of VHS Co., moving to Virginia. There he built the Cascades Golf Course at his home called "Homestead." During WW II the Japanese diplomats were lodged in The Homestead, where their activities were monitored by the state department and FBI. After the war their hotel prospered. The letters are from Rachel's mother, circa 1900-1910 include seven envelopes and all together 300+ pages providing an intimate look into the world of an interesting, active woman. Overall VG.
