1 JACK WACHTMAN, USN 1917 - 1918 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL AND LOG BOOK OF A US NAVY RADIO OPERATOR PATROLLING THE EASTERN SEABOARD FROM QUEBEC TO CUBA
NEW YORK MONTREAL MARTHA'S VINEYARD NORFOLK HAVANA 1918 Full-Leather Good Manuscript
On offer is an original manuscript World War I sailor's log book handwritten by wireless operator Jack Wachtman, USN. Dated September 1st 1918 through October 1919 over approximately 80 pages of writing and entries in this book the reader follows Jack from New York City to Buffalo, Cornwall Ontario Canada the Quebec down the Eastern Seaboard and down to Cuba eventually. This seems to be a regular route patrolling the coast but in 1919 we find near the end of the diary Jack is in France. Collectors of World War I American naval history will appreciate Jack's no frills, but quite detailed, entries and notes of his duties; inspections; the weather; marine observations; end of War celebrations; the ship's course and much more. Sometimes, mostly on leaves in Cuba, New York and the few other ports he makes personal remarks related to his leave: movies seen, with which pal or girlfriend; everything closed on account of Spanish Influenza; special duties for the Captain. There are a small number of ephemera pieces tipped in that add depth to the journal as we are presented with a picture of the handsome sailor an one with a girlfriends and a few documents related to his service. The leather cover has seen better times being poor but overall G.
