On offer is an interesting original 1896 manuscript diary hand written by Lucy Leighton Crandon of Columbia, Maine. While the diary is unsigned informal research suggests that the writer is a young woman named Lucy Leighton Crandon. One Seth Allen is mentioned repeatedly throughout the fully written diary and US Census records from 1940 record a Lucy Allen, married to Seth Allen, born about 1880 and residing in Columbia Falls, ME, the place where the diary was apparently written. She would have been about 16 when this was written. Her days are packed with activities and she has a very busy social life. Her entries are replete with references to friends and family. As noted above, a frequent entry is a young man named Seth Allen and records indicate that she did end up marrying him., possibly around 1902. She attended Westbrook Seminary in Westbrook ME. Originally a private girl's school, today, it is a college of the University of New England. Some excerpts will give a reader the sense of her lively personality and easy conversational way of writing: This has been quite a good day. I have been at school all day. I was up to Aunt Josies three time tonight after school. Aunt Josie, Fan and I have been getting my bridal veil ready for the play. We met over to the hall this evening. Had a dress rehearsal. May Chandler is prompter, Tudy Brickman plays the wedding march and etc. Aunt Josie helps us dress. Got home about eleven. Seth came home with me…..It has been a very good day. Have been at school all day. Mrs. Sofa Garland and baby were here to tea. I was up to Aggies to night to get my head combed. We went over to the hall about 6:30 and at eight presented the four act drama entitled, "A Fisherman's Luck." Had quite a good house and everything went off well. We all were painted. I took the principal part. I received quite a number of compliments. Seth came home with me. Bess Coffin is to stay all night with me. [Apr 29-30] Our hired girl, Mrs. Manchester and mamma have been cleaning house today. They cleaned all of the chambers except one. They took up my carpet and Franks. Josie and I moved over in our summer room. Remmey put the carpets down this P.M. Seth was in this eve and we went out for a walk. Mrs. Manchester is coming tomorrow and they are going to clean down stairs. [May 12] This has been quite a good day. Seth and I came home via of Tibbetts Town last night and didn't get home until 12:40. He wanted to kiss me last night but I wouldn't let him. Guss and Seth went to Machias this P.M. Bernie and Agnes was down this P.M. Agnes, Frank and I started for Jonesport this eve. at five, got there about seven. Had a room at the hotel. I wore my black suit and Agnes her dimity. All 3 of us wore lilies of the valley. [June 6] A social historian will find this diary an excellent window into the life and times of a young woman in rural Maine. She writes well, is observant and her notes and her entries are full - often lengthy. There is a pre-printed information section as well as about 30 pages for additional information such as addresses and accounts. This last section is about 50% complete. The diary measures about 3" x 4 3/4" and other than a bit of wear on the cover it's in good shape.
