On offer is a super 1943 - 1944 action packed manuscript relic of World War II American Naval history being an official ship's "WAR DIARY" kept and compiled by Lt. Comdr. David M. Kellogg aboard the USS Thomas (DE-102), a Cannon Class Destroyer Escort involved in the sinking of three German submarines. The copied, typewritten journal is a fascinating read and shows the dangers the crew faced hunting Nazi subs, including enduring a major storm and witnessing an attack on a sub in which a US pilot was killed. The diary conveys the extremely aggressive, professional and courageous nature of the US Navy in taking the fight to the Germans. Dated December 1943 through June 1945 detailed entries include the ramming and sinking of one of those German subs, almost running directly into a fleet of British ships that refused to yield, aiding injured crew and dealing with an inept Icelandic boat captain and much, much more. This ship and her crew did not seem to have much down time during the war. The ship received 4 battles stars in WWII. Very appropriate given the mission of the USS Thomas was to "Operate offensively against enemy submarines" and the ship would speed to any opportunity to engage German subs and attack immediately. The 9 x 12 inch book is very good save for one page being loose. Overall VG.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF, LT. COMDR. DAVID M.
