On offer is a most unique handbook on bookbinding. Measuring 9 inches by 5.5 inches, it contains about 308 pages and is approximately 65% complete. The thick paperboard cover is in good condition and all of the pages are securely attached. The handwriting is legible and easy to read. The author of this handbook is Jane Kirkland Graham, most likely the American author of the same name but there is no conclusive evidence. The handbook has a thumb index created by the author. The pages are not numbered. The book deals extensively with the art and craft of bookbinding and begins with an annotated quotation and bibliography: "Book-binding as a Handiwork Subject by J. Halliday Dutton on p. 73 $1.00 This work explains how books can be bound with simple apparatus in a school classroom ... Bookbinding Old and New by Brander Matthews, the MacMillan Co., Illustrated (Nov 1919)". What follows are 58 page under the heading Readings that delineating the history of book binding. Her references are broad - Mecenate (the 16th century Italian collection), Grolier (Jean Grolier de Servières, the 16th century Treasurer-General of France and a famous bibliophile. As a book collector, Grolier is known for his love of richly decorated book bindings) and John Reynes (the famous English book binder in the 16th century). "... of Grolier's bindings the learned De Thou a latent, less famous bibliophile remarked "that his books partook of the elegant polish of their owner" The Grolier style is yet recognized as the most { }, elegant and appropriate method of book ornamentation , it is immediately attained at enormous reputation in France ..." Work on Bookbinding is compiled from such authorities as Joseph Cundall; W Salt Brassington; ST Prideaux, Henri Bouchet & Brander Matthews. "... the headbands which are next attached to the back head and tails are ornamented appendages, which partly conceal the folded edges of the leather and give a finished aspect to the book. ...". This background section is followed by an index of book binding terminology and important names. The balance of the book contains a wide variety of explanations and examples of English-language grammar rules, grammar mechanics and usage. She makes extensive use of 'sentence diagramming' or 'parse trees', a methodology developed by Reed and Kellogg to show a pictorial representation of the grammatical structure of a sentence. This is an outstanding treatise on the history of book binding and could well stand on its own as a piece of work. Literary historians, archivists and those in the field of book binding (professional or amateur) would find this alone to be an excellent and valuable reference. Writers and grammarians would find the sections on the mechanics and grammar of the English language an excellent resource and a perfect illustration of the use of a classic language teaching skill - a skill that works as well today as it did when developed in 1877.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF, BOOKBINDING; JANE KIRKLAND GRAHAM; JEAN GROLIER DE SERVIÈRES; JOHN REYNES; ENGLISH GRAMMAR RULES, BIBLIOGRAPHY OF BOOKBINDING, BOOKBINDERS, BOOKBINDING TERMS, SENTENCE DIAGRAMS, ART OF THE BOOK, MECHANICS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, LANGUAGE PEDAGOGY, LANGUAGE TEACHING, AMERICANA, HANDWRITTEN, MANUSCRIPT, DOCUMENT, LETTER, AUTOGRAPH, WRITER, HAND WRITTEN, DOCUMENTS, SIGNED, LETTERS, MANUSCRIPTS, DIARY, DIARIES, JOURNALS, PERSONAL HISTORY, SOCIAL HISTORY, HISTORICAL, HOLOGRAPH, WRITERS, AUTOGRAPHS, PERSONAL, MEMOIR, MEMORIAL, ANTIQUITÉ, CONTRAT, VÉLIN, DOCUMENT, MANUSCRIT, PAPIER ANTIKE, BRIEF, PERGAMENT, DOKUMENT, MANUSKRIPT, PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO, ATTO, VELINA, DOCUMENTO, MANOSCRITTO, CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD, HECHO, VITELA, DOCUMENTO, MANUSCRITO, PAPEL
