On offer is a lovely diary of a young woman living in the southern United States during the depths of the Great Depression. The diary was written in 1932 by Josephine Thomas. Our informal research has not turned up any additional biographical information on her. Internal context clues indicate that she lives in or around Richmond, Virginia. Ms. Thomas' entries detail her daily life and how it revolves around family and her work. She works at the new DuPont manufacturing facility, built in Richmond in 1927. Her hours however, are not steady. Although there is work most days, not every day is a full eight hours. She operates machinery: "Went back to work today. I was transferred to a machine, got off 7 1/2 trays of spools. We are just working 7 1/2 hours a day now - started today. What will they do next? ? ? ? ? ? ..." [Mar 17, 1932]; "I worked on same machine today, did some washing when I got home. I am plenty tired to-nite. EC and I went to church" [Apr 5, 1932]; "Today is payday. They took the cleaners off the machines today, also speeded the 1 up. Gee! What will the efficiency be! ? ? We went home" [May 6, 1932]; "I got payed off today. What a big check. 3 Days! ! ..." [Aug 12, 1932]. When she is not working, she spends almost all of her time with her family or her close friends: "Uncle Joe and Aunt Fanny came this morning. Mother washed and I did the mornings work and finished the doll. I went up to Grannies and took supper" [July 6, 1932]; "Mother, Will and I went to Aunt Ethel's from church today. Had a swell time. EC, mother and I took supper with Grandmother" [Oct 30, 1932]; "I slept late, made Mrs. Husbands doll...We had lots of fun ... Went down to see Cozy" [Dec 1, 1932]. This very simple diary paints a fine picture of life for a young woman in the Depression. Although she has to deal with hard work and economic uncertainty, there are no words of complaint or upset. It would be especially valuable for a researcher in Women's Studies or Social History as it clearly shows the circumstances faced by women working in factories, not just in Richmond but across America during the Great Depression. This hard cover diary measures approximately 7.5 inches by 5 inches. It contains 60 pages and is 100% complete. The covers are in good condition but the spine has broken where the front cover is attached. The pages are all intact and are in good condition. The handwriting is quite legible. There is a black and white photo, presumably of the author, glued in to the first page. ; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 60 pages; Great Depression, Southern US, women's experience, women in factories, factory workers, Depression-era, lived experience, women's studies, women's work, single women, handwritten, manuscript, document, letter, autograph, writer, hand written, documents, signed, letters, manuscripts, historical, holograph, writers, autographs, personal, memoir, memorial, antiquité, contrat, vélin, document, manuscrit, papier antike, brief, pergament, dokument, manuskript, papier oggetto d'antiquariato, atto, velina, documento, manoscritto, carta antigüedad, hecho, vitela, documento, manuscrito, papel, ; Signed by Author
