Dated Oct. 6 1794 Opelousas, Louisiana William Wickoff writes to New Orleans businessman Hamilton Pollock. We observe that despite the spelling of 'cabin' William appears an educated man and one of the non-Acadians listed in early census of the Attakapas. On offer is an absolutely sensational ancient, original 1750s manuscript sailor's vade mecum or reference manual handwritten by and or for a mariner over 260 years ago. The name William Wine appears on the rear inside cover dated March 4th 1788. The handwriting is similar throughout to the signature but it is inconclusive if Mr. Wine is the author, original owner or a later owner. The first page, detached but present, is dated November 1750. On offer is an original late 18th Century 'collection' letter from Mr. Elijah Allen, a prominent businessman from Hunterdon County, New Jersey, dated 4/25/1792. It refers to a General Maxwell and money and says in part: "Dear sir, General Maxwell has been here & through the multiplicity of business forgot to bring the money to me.
